The teleprompter
The teleprompter shows the play's text, one line at a time, on a backstage display: a screen in the wings, a tablet, or an LED panel facing the actors. It moves independently of the cue list: the person in charge advances it from a phone, without touching light or sound; the stage manager can also advance it with keys of the conductor.
To open it: menu File > Teleprompter…. The text is saved in the show.
The text
Click Import a text… and choose a text file (UTF-8 or ANSI) in the répétiteur format:
- each line starts with
@NAMEfollowed by the text, or withNAME:at the start of a line; the name is in capitals (JEAN-CLAUDE,L'HOMMEare fine); - a
# titleline marks the start of a scene (# Act II); it is not shown on the screen; - two lines in a row by the same character are joined.
The window sums up the text: number of lines, characters, text scenes, and how many of those scenes carry the name of a scene of the show. Each character gets a colour. Importing again keeps the settings; Remove takes the text out of the show.
The settings
- Display: the backstage display that shows the text (declare it first in Venue > Backstage displays…). For an LED panel, also set the visible part of the picture there and hide the bar: see Backstage displays.
- Max characters per screen: a longer line is cut into several screens, at the end of a sentence if possible, otherwise after a comma, otherwise between two words. 0 = the whole line on one screen. On a small panel, lower this number to keep the text readable.
- Show the character's name above the text, in its colour.
- Follow the show's scenes: when the show enters a scene, the teleprompter jumps to the first line of the text scene carrying the same name (capitals and accents ignored; the scene's short name counts too). So name your DreamShow scenes like the
#markers of the text. A scene without a matching marker does not move the teleprompter.
The list shows every screen; the one on display is highlighted. Double-click a screen to show it. At the bottom: ◀ Previous, BLACKOUT (clears the screen; Show the text again brings it back) and Next ▶, with the position (« Screen 12 / 870 »).
By voice
Tick Advance by voice: the lines microphone (the same as for the Wait for a spoken line blocks, chosen just below) listens to the stage, and the prompter moves to the next screen by itself.
- The screen changes as soon as all of it but its last word has been said, or at the first pause once most of it was said: a line said a little differently from the text moves it on too.
- If a passage is skipped, or not heard (a voice coming from a loudspeaker far from the microphone), the prompter catches up as soon as it recognises what follows. If the text is taken up again earlier, it goes back.
- To jump ahead or back, it needs a consistent passage of several words: a few words that occur all over the text (a first name, "de", "le") are never enough.
- The hand keeps priority: a move from the phone, the keys or this window puts the listening there. While BLACK is on, nothing moves.
- Under the box, the window shows the microphone listened to and the last words heard.
Show the next screen greyed out adds the next screen, in grey, below the current one: the actor sees their line coming while the other one speaks. It helps by voice when the previous line is said by a voice the microphone hears badly.
Recognition runs on the PC, without Internet. Spoken language (under the box) chooses the language of the text: French, English, German, Spanish or Italian — the same as the show's Wait for a spoken line… blocks. French comes with DreamShow; another language is downloaded once (40 to 50 MB) when it is chosen. Place the microphone close to the actors: the more clearly it hears, the better the screen changes on time.
From a phone
On the phone, on the same network as the control desk, open the address shown in the window: http://<control PC address>:8091/prompteur. The page shows the whole text, the line on screen highlighted and centred, the next one slightly brighter:
- SUIVANT ▶ (next, big button under the thumb), ◀ to go back, NOIR to clear the screen (TEXTE to bring it back);
- tap a line, then Afficher ici to jump to it;
- A− / A+ set the text size on the phone;
- a Bluetooth presentation remote paired with the phone works too: arrows, Page Down/Page Up, Space (next/previous), B or full stop (black).
A green dot at the top shows the link; if it is cut, a red banner appears and the page reconnects by itself. Several phones can be connected: they all follow the same position. Set the phone's sleep delay to a long time; the page cannot prevent it.
From the conductor
In File > Remote (GO keys)…, the sections Teleprompter: next screen and Teleprompter: previous screen take the keys of your choice (none by default). They act in the conductor window, in show mode.
Good to know
- The screen and the phone page go through the display server (port 8091), which starts as soon as the show has a text and the venue declares a display.
- A timeline Backstage display… block aimed at the same display replaces the text until the next teleprompter move.
- The position is not saved: when the show is reopened, the teleprompter starts again from the beginning (or from the current scene if it follows the scenes).
- The phone page has no password: trusted network only.
